Label

Label explores the interval between the body, language, and systems of naming, focusing on how women are continuously observed, categorised, and defined in contemporary society. The labels attached to the skin reference a social phenomenon of label bundling and persistent categorisation, through which external definitions gradually blur self-perception. The phrase “succulent animal” originates from a linguistic misplacement in Chinese of “succulent plants.” The work allows it to remain inscribed on the body rather than correcting this error, revealing the instability and slippage of classification systems across cultural and gendered contexts. The act of tearing off the label is not presented as a resolution, but as an ongoing negotiation, situating women in a suspended space between social inscription and self-recognition.
